Course of Studies 2008-2009
                                                                                    February 26, 2008

Dear Parents and Students:

We will begin the scheduling process for the 2008-2009 school year on March 4, 2008.  On that day, we will be distributing to students the Course of Studies for next year.   We ask all parents and students to review this letter and discuss course options carefully before completing the form students will receive with their Course of Studies.

Parents and students will have approximately one week, from March 4-March 12th, to review elective offerings.  The Course of Studies details information about all courses in the high school curriculum and includes prerequisites and expectations.  In general, each student will select 2 to 4 electives outside the core courses (2 if the courses are year long, 4 if the courses are semester length).  Students who are not taking a foreign language may have an additional block for an elective course.  It is helpful to review graduation requirements and typical schedules by year, as outlined in the beginning of the Course of Studies.  In grades 9 and 10, the P.E. & Health class will automatically be put into the schedule for one semester.  There will be no exclusion from P.E. based on other course requests.

We ask that each student complete the bottom of the form they receive in school with elective choices in order of preference and return it to school on Thursday, March 13th, for the next step in the registration process.  During the normal class periods, students will meet briefly with each teacher to discuss placement for 2008-2009.  Teachers will put course and level recommendations for next year on the form, signing it and returning it to the students to take with them to the next class.   At the end of the day, all forms will be collected and returned to the Guidance Office.  A list of your course requests and recommendations will then be developed and mailed home on March 24th.  Parents and students are asked to carefully review the list and to contact the guidance department with questions or concerns.  Parents and students are asked to sign the course request list and return it to the Guidance Office by April 4, 2008.  Faculty will be asked to review student progress at the end of the school year to make any final adjustments to the recommendations.

Students and parents will have ample time to discuss concerns with faculty and guidance counselors as this process evolves.  If you have questions, please direct them to the appropriate teacher or counselor.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

James Lee
